Exfoliating the skin has become an essential step in many skincare routines. By exfoliating, you can remove dead skin cells and improve the texture and glow of your skin. This is great, of course, but there are also risks associated with over-exfoliating. Little Wonderland hopes to help you understand what over-exfoliation is, what causes it, what the risks are and how you can prevent it.
What is over-exfoliation?
Over-exfoliation disrupts the skin barrier. The skin barrier protects against harmful external influences, and damaging this barrier can have very negative consequences. It can result in several signs of a disrupted skin barrier:
- Redness
- Dry skin
- Tight / sensitive skin
- Breakouts
If you notice signs like these, it is important to give your skin enough time to rest. Read more about barrier care in our blog.
What causes over-exfoliation?
Exfoliation is often used to help get rid of impurities, but in practice, excessive use can actually make inflammation worse. It is therefore important to understand what causes it: using multiple exfoliating products at the same time, a negative interaction with other ingredients and not allowing enough time between routines.
Safe exfoliation: choose gentle alternatives
Not every exfoliant is equally intense. These options are gentler on the skin and reduce the risk of irritation.
PHA (Polyhydroxy Acids)
PHA is one of the gentlest acids. It exfoliates the surface of the skin while also helping to retain moisture, making it ideal for sensitive or dehydrated skin.
Enzymatic exfoliation
Enzymes from ingredients such as papaya or pumpkin help dissolve dead skin cells without abrasive particles. A perfect choice if your skin reacts quickly to acids.
Mandelic Acid
Mandelic acid is a gentle AHA that works more slowly on the skin than glycolic acid. This makes it a good beginner-friendly option for dull skin or mild impurities.
A barrier-friendly routine with safe exfoliation
Step 1 — Cleanse gently
Use a gentle cleanser that cleanses the skin without disrupting its natural barrier.
Step 2 — Exfoliate once a week
Choose a gentle enzymatic peel or a PHA product. Exfoliate no more than once a week and only when your skin feels comfortable.
Step 3 — Soothe and hydrate
After exfoliating, it is important to support the skin immediately with soothing ingredients such as Centella Asiatica, beta-glucan or panthenol.
Step 4 — Restore the skin barrier
A cream with ceramides helps reduce moisture loss and strengthens the skin's protective barrier.
Step 5 — Protect with SPF
Exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV radiation. Daily SPF 50 is therefore essential, even on cloudy days.
